Illinois Special Olympics provides year round sports training in a variety of Olympic-type sports for individuals who are 8 years and older and who have mental impairments or closely related developmental disabilities. The program gives athletes opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of skills and friendship with their families and other athletes.
WSSRA supports the mission of Special Olympics through the participation in the following sports: Aquatics, Basketball, Bowling, Golf, Gymnastics, Softball, Track & Field, and Volleyball.
IMPORTANT UPDATE: Special Olympics has updated its athlete form
All athletes must complete the new Athlete Registration and Waiver & Release form. These documents must be on file with the WSSRA Special Olympics coordinator.
The agency will schedule a meeting for families to go over the new forms before the beginning of the summer season.

Applications for Participation in Illinois Special Olympics are valid for 1 year based on the earliest signed date on the application form (a medical professional no longer needs to sign off on the form). All current Special Olympics Medical forms will expire on December 31st, 2025
